Top 30 MLM Companies

Well here it is – the definitive list of top MLM companies.  Published in Direct Selling News, the full list consists of 68 companies that do more than $100 million a year in sales.  Pretty impressive.  Anyone who says that somehow this is a flimsy industry are clearly coming from ignorance and self delusion.

I’ve reproduced the top 30 for your interest.  As you would expect Avon and Amway are the leaders.  Interestingly, not that long ago Amway was number 1, with Avon trailing.  But in recent years Avon has come storming back.  Not that Amway is doing too bad!  Last year’s sales were up 8 per cent, which is great considering their size and age.

Interestingly the US and Japan take the lion’s share in terms of number of companies featured, with the US accounting for 44 and Japan 14, making a total of 58 out of 68.

This list shows that collectively the top 30 MLM companies account for more than $48 billion in wholesale revenues!  Not too shabby.  See if your favorite company is listed here.

1. Avon. $10.7 billion in estimated wholesale corporate revenue.  New York based Avon was founded in 1886, and therefore qualifies as the grand daddy of MLM/direct sales companies (or should that be grand ma?).  They market beauty products, jewelery and apparel using personal marketing methods – door to door is still their mainstay.  They have a multi-level and single level pay plan.

2. Alticor (Amway). $8.2 billion in estimated wholesale corporate revenue.  They got started in 1959 by Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel, who were previously top distributors in another company, Nutrilite (years later Nutrilite was purchased by Amway).  Based in Ada Michigan, the company has a large manufacturing and research facility which manufactures most of their core product lines – home care, nutritional and personal care.  They also market many other products including security, insurance, phone systems and grocery lines.  The company employs person to person marketing.  Their pay plan is multi level.

3. Vorwerk (JAFRA). This German based company clocks up $3.4 billion in estimated wholesale corporate revenue.  Founded in 1883, Vorwek markets cosmetics though their Jafra division and home appliance products via Vorwerk.  Distribution methods used include party plan and direct selling.  Their pay plan is multi-level.

4. Mary Kay. Pink rules!  Founded in 1963, Mary Kay has produced $2.6 billion in estimated wholesale corporate revenue.  This Texas based business markets skincare and color cosmetics using party plan and person to person marketing within a multi level and single level pay plan.

5. Herbalife. ‘Make money now, ask me how’ should be the mantra of this 29 year old Los Angeles based company – plenty of their distributors have done exactly that.  Sales (wholesale revenues) last year were approx $2.4 billion.  Products are focused on health, weight management and personal care.  They use person to person marketing via an MLM pay plan.

6. Primerica Financial Services. Considering this business primarily operates in North America only, their results are mighty impressive.   $2.2 billion in estimated wholesale revenue last year for this Georgia based company, which was originally known as A L Williams and founded by Art Williams himself.  Founded in 1977, they market financial services using person to person marketing and employ a multi level comp plan.

7. Tupperware. Who said there wasn’t money in plastic?  Founded in 1946 this Florida based company produced approx $2.2 billion in sales (wholesale revenues)  last year.  They market storage and serving products, plus beauty and personal care products, via a party plan and person to person marketing system.  Their pay plan is multi-level.

8. Natura Cosmeticos. Brazil has its own MLM success story – last year Natura produced approx $1.9 billion in sales (wholesale revenues).   Founded in 1969, Natura markets cosmetics, personal care and fragrance products using person to person marketing.

9. Oriflame. Swedish based Oriflame generated $1.9 billion in approx sales (wholesale revenues) last year.  Founded in 1967, the company markets beauty products using person to person marketing within a multi-level pay plan structure.

10. Forever Living. Most of this Arizona based company’s sales derive from North America as their foray into international markets had mixed results.  But they still clocked up $1.7 billion in estimated wholesale revenue.   Founded in 1978, the company markets nutritional supplements, skincare, cosmetics and weight loss products.  They use person to person marketing via a multi-level pay plan.

11. Nu Skin. Sales have slipped in recent years, but they still generated approx $1.2 billion in sales (wholesale revenues) last year.  Founded in 1984, this Utah based company markets nutritional supplements, personal-care and technology products using person to person marketing via a multi-level pay plan.

12. Melaleuca. Amazing how this company’s product line revolves around a pungent substance called Melaleuca (the Melaleuca tree is very common in my home country of Australia).  But the concept works because the company produced $887 million in sales (wholesale revenues) last year.  The co got going in 1985 from their base in Idaho. They market personal care products, cosmetics, household cleaning products and vitamins.  They use person to person marketing via a multi-level pay plan.

13. MonaVie. Within the MLM industry you would have to say that Utah based MonaVie is a rising star.  A hyper growth company, MonaVie only got started in 2005 yet produced approx $854.9 million in sales (wholesale revenues) last year.  Astonishing.  The company markets nutritional supplements and functional beverages using person to person marketing linked to a multi-level pay plan.

14. Ignite. Another high flyer, Ignite operates in the utilities sector and markets electricity and natural gas.  Last year they did an estimated $825 million in sales (wholesale revenues).  Founded in 2004, this Texas based company uses person to person marketing via a multi-level pay plan.

18. Noevir Co. Founded in 1964, this Japan based company produced $586.7 million in estimated wholesale revenue last year.  They market cosmetics and nutritional supplements, using person to person methods via a multi level pay plan..

19. ACN. More than $500 million in sales (wholesale revenue). Founded in 1993, this North Carolina based company markets telecommunication, satellite TV and home security systems using person to person marketing and a multi-level pay plan.  The company has an aggressive international expansion program underway, which should produce a significant increase in sales over the next few years.

20. Shaklee. It’s hard to believe that there was a time when good ol’ Shaklee was running neck and neck with Amway.  Many years ago the company embarked on an international expansion program, and failed miserably, whereas Amway triumphed. Still $500 million in  sales (wholesale revenues) is OK.  Shaklee got started in 1956 in California and markets air filter systems, household cleaners, nutritional supplements, water treatment, skincare and weight management products.  They employ person to person marketing via a multi-level pay plan.

21. Pre-Paid Legal Services. $464.5 million in estimated wholesale corporate revenue.  The company was founded in 1972, in Oklahoma and  markets legal consultation services using person to person marketing via a multi-level pay plan.

25. Usana. Another Utah based MLM (what is it with Utah?), Usana was founded in 1992 and produced approx $429 million in wholesale revenue last year.  They market nutritional supplements, personal care, energy and weight management products using person to person marketing via a multi-level comp plan.

26. Nature’s Sunshine. NS is what I call a quiet achiever.  They don’t run a big time recruitment machine, and their product line is what you would call ‘alternate’, yet they still clocked up $381.3 million in wholesale revenue last year. And you guessed it, they’re based in Utah.   Founded in 1972, the company markets nutritional supplements, weight management, aromatherapy, water purification and cookware products using personal to person marketing via a multi-level comp plan.

27. Expert Alliance. Japanese based Expert Alliance generated approx $360.2 million in wholesale revenue. Founded in 1997, the company markets mutual aid services/road service via a multi level pay plan.

28. Mannatech. Mannatech has had some controversy with a few run-ins with the FDA (over the top overkill from the bureaucrats if you ask me), yet they still produced $332.7 million in wholesale revenue. Founded in 1994, the company markets dietary supplements, weight/fitness and skin care products using person to person marketing via a  multi-level comp plan.  And here is the good news – they are not from Utah!  (Texas actually.)

29. Naturally Plus. Another Japanese success story, Naturally Plus cranked out $330 million in estimated wholesale revenue last year.  Founded in 1999, the company markets nutrition and personal care products, using person to person marketing via a multi level pay plan. .

  1. guy I know told me to check out your blog. This is just the type of detail I was searching for. I wish I’d have found your site earlier.

  2. This list is the most in accurate thing I have ever seen in my life. Growing up in a family who all are millionairs because of network marketing I get to know the top earners in most all of your top ten and ALL of those numbers are WAY off. Where did you get these numbers from? I mean Monavie for example, they are not making almost a billion dollars a year right now, the fastest company to hit a billion dollars a year was NuSkin and they did it in 11 years I believe. And now you are saying that Monavie is about to completely shatter industry records by 5 years! And where are company giants like Xango? they should be on this list for sure.

Posting something like this is irresponsible and could make a family make a wrong decision in a company based on these numbers that look like are made up from somebody who knows little about the industry.

  3. Sorry this was posted in 2009 that means in 4 years Monavie has almost made a billion dollars a year in sales? Do you really believe that? Who tricked you into thinking thats what they were making.

Noni only making 450 million a year lol yeah right lol, switch Noni and Monavie on the list and ad about 800 million to Noni. Avon is not making 10 billion a year lol do you know how much money that is? lol.

Pre paid legal, there is a company that you got correct lol. Amway is correct too i think, they were over ten billion until they changed their name to… global… er… whatever it was then they lost 2 billion a year crazy huh, im sure people who look at this stuff know that tho…

  4. Great list…hope to land on it someday.

  5. New MLM companies are formed and launched almost every day. Finding these new companies is easy. You can be invited to join by someone you know, answer an ad or research the internet to find one. One of the best websites to research new MLM companies is npros.com.

  6. Yes, Monavie did almost hit a Billion dollars in annualized sales, but not quite. As a past Director of Nu Skin – having worked corporate side for 10 years, and as the International Sr. Manager over the Americas for Xango, and finally a distributor for Monavie in 2009 and 2010, the report above on Monavie is quite accurate as is the report on Tahitian Noni (Morinda) and Xango.

  8. We have had great success so far with the products and business side of Visi. My husband and I have lost 30 lbs since taking the new Visi Trimma product. I predict that this company will continue to grow and with the new products ready to launch next month, now seems to be the time to get started with Visi. Lose weight and make some extra cash working from home is a win win.
